Libra mythology, i.e., the mythology of Libra the Scales, seventh among 12 zodiac signs is of its being the chariot that transported Persephone to Hades. Looking at it from the angle of this myth, Libra is to be seen pulled between Virgo or Persephone and Scorpio representing Hades, Lord of the underworld.
According to Greek mythology Persephone - the goddess Virgo - was a matchless beauty and Hades fell for her as he saw her collecting flowers in the garden. He tore opened the earth, came up above and abducted her along back to the underworld.
When her mother Demeter did not find her anywhere she was heart-broken and started wandering through each and every corner of earth searching for her. When Hades came to know of it, he felt anxious of his welfare as well and started planning ways out of this intrigue.
At last the two came to a compromise and made a pact between them that said Demeter's daughter would keep shifting between the earth and the underworld by the chariot of Libra. According to this pact Persephone was supposed to stay in the Underworld for one-third of the year with Hades, and the rest eight months she was allowed to come and stay on earth with her mother Demeter.
The duration of time, i.e., the four months when Persephone stayed in the Underworld, Demeter so acutely pined for her daughter that the earth turned barren all over!
