Constellation Virgo in the zodiac lies in between those of Leo and Libra, Leo lying to its west and Libra to the east. Being the second largest constellation, you can easily spot it with the help of its brightest star Spica.

To spot Spica in the zodiac, just follow the curve of the Big Dipper to Arcturus in Boötes and continue from there along the same curve. Owing to precession, the First Point of Libra – the autumn equinox point – lies within the boundaries of Virgo quite close to beta Virginis. The celestial equator crosses the ecliptic at the First Point of Libra along with the First Point of Aries, which also lies in the constellation of Pisces now. So this point is also going to be a part of its neighboring constellation by the year 2440.

Other bright stars in Virgo are beta Virginis (Zavijava), gamma Vir (Porrima), delta Virginis (Auva) and epsilon Virginis (Vindemiatrix). Some fainter stars that have been ascribed names to them are zeta Virginis (Heze), eta Virginis (Zaniah), iota Virginis (Syrma) and mu Virginis (Rijl al Awwa).

The star 70 Virginis is an extrasolar planetary system with at least one planet 7.5 times the mass of Jupiter revolving around it.

A cluster of galaxies, named the Virgo cluster, makes this constellation very rich in galaxies like Messier 49 (elliptical), Messier 58 (spiral), Messier 59 (elliptical), Messier 60 (elliptical), Messier 61 (spiral), Messier 84 (lenticular), Messier 86 (lenticular), Messier 87 (elliptical and a famous radio source), Messier 89 (elliptical) and Messier 90 (spiral).

Virgo in Latin means virgin, which makes its symbol, looking like  portraying a virgin carrying two sheaves of wheat.

H.A. Rey has suggested another way to connect the stars, which graphically shows the virgin lying down in a supine position.

As of 2002, the Sun appears in the constellation Virgo from September 16 to October 30. In tropical astrology, the Sun is considered to be in the constellation Virgo Virgo from August 24 to September 22, and in sidereal astrology, from September 16 to October 15. That is how these stars affect people born during this period and make the constellations their zodiac signs.
